Day 13 – Florence

The Hotel Monna Lisa has a beautiful ceiling in its entry, formerly a portal for carriages. This hotel is located to the east of the Duomo, an area new to me.

According to the hotel’s brochure, this spot in 1439 housed the Patriarch of Constantinople and 23 Greek bishops in his entourage for an Ecumenical Council held in Florence. Recently I read about this major event in a book on Florence’s history. It described huge numbers of foreign visitors from the East inundating Florence, creating a spectacle, just as tourists do today. The hotel’s main staircase has elegant curves, and historic items from various periods decorate throughout.
