Day 32 – Gubbio

The van trip to Gubbio brings us through many miles of green countryside.

Our bookmaking master Giuseppe “Pepe” Baldinelli delights us with his sense of humor and expertise.

His family business is called IKUNICO, The name comes from the ancient language of the Umbri peoples which was discovered on bronze plaques now owned by the town of Gubbio.

Pepe’s father was a shoemaker whose tools and photo are displayed in the factory office.

Pepe and his son Jacopo emboss characters from the ancient language in their leather goods.

Pepe shows us how to sew together sections for the books we are making.

We imprint the book covers with leaves, a pleasant surprise coming just after my eco-printing workshop.

Jacobo wets the leaves prior to printing the leather in a machine.

Some leaves show color more than others. These Holm Oak leaves work very well.

We spend all day making the books, learning a lot about hand bookbinding.

Debra is happy with her book cover.

The surroundings make it a pleasant place to work.

Back in Fabriano, we have another late dinner and then pack up.

Tomorrow we head off to Urbino.
