Day 17 – Como

Today we took a van from Bellagio to Como to visit the silk museum, the Museo della Seta di Como. As we drove along the lake into Como, our guide pointed out George Clooney’s property in the tiny village of Laglio. It was impossible to see much at all, but it was surprising that, at least from the road, there seemed little open space around it.

We passed along many beautiful spots, although living here full-time would be difficult, what with the traffic and tourists and who knows what else. Oh, the steep hills and stairs!

As we entered the town of Como, our guide also pointed out the many sites that were once textile factories and that are now empty lots or shopping malls.

The museum shows the silk making process from start to finish with a focus on the history of the silk industry in the Como area. It is sponsored by silk manufacturers who wish to preserve the story of Como’s contribution to textile history. The wooden table below is where mulberry leaves used to be set out for silk worms to eat and grow.
