Day 20 Locarno and Ascona

Today I visited Giorgio Cheda and his wife Carla. Giorgio wrote the introduction to my book Miners, Milkers & Merchants. They live on a hillside above Locarno with views galore of Lago Maggiore. At one time the hills were covered with vineyards owned by people who lived in the Locarno flats. They would grow grapes just for their family’s use. Overtime, Locarno grew in population. Now the hills are covered with homes.

Carla made a wonderful girasole (sunflower) stuffed with Swiss Chard from their garden. We also drank some grape juice made only with the grapes from their vines. It was a great pleasure to visit with them and to revisit some of the stories of immigrants from Ticino to California.
