Today it looked like rain, so we took umbrellas to the Siracusa archeological park. Fortunately it didn’t spoil our tour of the Greek and Roman ruins. Our guide, Laura, explained the history behind the stones before us. Here she is in front of what’s called the Ear of Demosthenes, a huge cave hand-carved by slaves in the quarry.
For us to experience the sound qualities in the cave, Laura sang Ave Maria while the pigeons flew from perch to perch above. She has a beautiful voice enhanced by the cave’s sound effects.
An enormous complex: the Greek Theater with a view to the sea, still used today to put on Classical Greek plays; the Roman Coliseum where gladiators fought; the quarry where slaves hacked away at the limestone to create the blocks for Siracusa buildings.
