Day5 – Matera

A day to roam the ups and downs of the steps of Matera as long and far as my legs can take me. I looked in at artisan shops along the way. First the shop of Lela Campitelli, a silversmith who also makes objects from recycled wood.

I eyed this little silver bicycle for my sister, but Lela said it’s a prototype that she cannot sell. I could not afford it, in any case.

Lela took me down some very steep steps into the cavern that she has transformed into an exhibition gallery and showed me the cistern beneath her shop. She talked about the memory of recycled materials in her wooden pieces. A kindred spirit.
