We flew to Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site, arriving mid-day. This ancient town is named for King Lalibela, who wanted to create a new Jerusalem in Ethiopia in the 12th century. In a period of 24 years, he built 11 churches carved from pink granite rock. A mass is still held in each church every day. Worshippers come from the village, navigating the steep paths and steps down into the church complex.
