Days 92-99 – Lucca

After a very hectic road trip around Tuscany, I have settled down in Lucca to catch my breath and attend Italian language school.

This week begins Cartasia, a biennial event in Lucca focused on paper art. Paper plays an important role in Lucca’s economy. Paper factories are located in its surroundings, taking advantage of the abundant water sources in the area.

Cartasia held a kick-off meeting in the Church of San Romano, the oldest Dominican convent and church in Lucca. Now the Church of San Romano has been deconsecrated, along with many other churches in Lucca that are used for other than religious purposes.
