Day 18 Iraqi al Amir and Amman

I am staying on Khirfan Street, one of the oldest streets in Amman, built by the grandfather of my Airbnb host Mohammed and my neighbor Jamal Khirfan in 1921 when Amman became the capital of Jordan.

It was once a wealthy neighborhood but now is poor. This gas man comes by in the morning and taps out a rhythm on his can so everyone knows he is here. Hosam, the sweets maker whose shop is next door, told me this type of activity is allowed in public places like Khirfan Street but not in private places, which I took to mean gated communities.
