Today, April 25th, is a public holiday in Italy, National Liberation Day. It celebrates the end of World War II and the end of fascism in Italy. We had found a bike ride that passed by some of the sites of partisan resistance. It looked like a great way to participate in the holiday, at least for Cheryl, who is in shape for that kind of event. I would follow in spirit.
Unfortunately, renting a bike for the day has its challenges. Here’s Cheryl at the share bike stand in Sestri. A membership card is required, available only on weekdays from 1pm to 4pm or some such at certain bars or tobacco shops. All much too convoluted for a transient tourist.
The bike trip organizers waited for Cheryl and sent her some photos of the trip. She is already planning for next year’s event.
We spent the day in Sestri to good advantage. Ornella and Maurizio had suggested Sestri as a beautiful spot, and it seems that many Italians share the sentiment. The holiday spirit pervaded the town, with families of beach goers, gelato eaters, strollers, shoppers, bikers and foccacia munchers filling the narrow streets of the town.
