We leave Florence today, so I take a bit of time to visit the Medici Chapels, located right around the corner from our lodging. I reach there at around 9:30am, so the massive crowds have not yet built up. I’m glad I took the time to visit, as it’s a stark, visual reminder of the incredible wealth and grandeur of the Medici family.
The opulent Cappella dei Principi, an idea formulated by Cosimo I, was implemented by Ferdinand I de’ Medici. A Grand Ducal hardstone workshop, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, was founded to create the incredible walls of marble inlaid with varied colored marbles and semi-precious stones.
